About Little BigHorn Battlefield National Monument
The Battle of the Little BigHorn took place in 1876 (June 25 and 26) between the 7th U.S. Cavalry and the Lakota and Cheyenne Indians. Northern Plains Indians fought this battle as one of their last armed efforts for preserving their ancestral way of life. Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer along with 260 soldiers lost their lives during this war.
Although Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is solely dedicated to the U.S. soldiers, the Congress changed this view and renamed the memorial in 1991. And, The National Park Service started placing red granite markers where the warriors are known to have fallen in 1999.
At recent times, a major headstone preservation project is in progress at Custer National Cemetery to preserve this historic monument. Along with the Custer National Cemetery, Little Bighorn has a visitor center, museum, library, 7th Cavalry Memorial, Reno-Benteen Battlefield, and Indian Memorial.
